Traveling from peninsular Charleston to the Town of Mount
Pleasant today offers an exciting lesson in humankind's
ability to build a better tomorrow. One of the engineering
wonders of our day, the Cooper River Bridge Replacement
Project is currently the largest construction project
in North America. This two-and-a-half-mile long, cable-stay
beauty is expected to open to traffic in the spring of
2005, much to the delight of area commuters.
The new bridge is a symbol of the vital connection between
Charleston and the burgeoning suburb of Mt. Pleasant,
which has exploded in population during the last two decades.
Assuming a controlled-growth posture, town planners have
worked diligently to preserve Mount Pleasant's rich heritage
and small-town appeal, while allowing it to gain the positive
attributes of a much larger city.
The charming Mount Pleasant Old Village, a National Register
district, features exquisite homes from both the colonial
and antebellum periods, while a multitude of surrounding
communities provide the ultimate in modern family living.
Soccer fields, swimming pools and baseball diamonds, all
filled with the sounds of active children, form the center
of many neighborhoods; and Mount Pleasant's schools rank
among the finest in the state.
Mount Pleasant offers a number of recreational areas offer
a variety of weekend and summertime opportunities. One
of the most notable is Palmetto Island County Park. With
its 943 acres, this park provides a multitutde of seasonal
recreational activities in a natural Lowcountry setting.
Two of the area's most popular beaches are located a short
drive away.
Mount Pleasant's appeal is not lost on active, sports-minded
adults. In fact, golf lovers can take advantage of four
magnificent courses, each with its own personality and
set of challenges. Charleston National Country Club also
hosts the American Tour Golf School. Billed as the grad
school for golfers, the facility has developed a comprehensive
program to help any serious golfer take their game to
the next level.
Fishing seems to be Mount Pleasants second most favorite
pastime, with expeditions for the big one launched from
backyard docks in the many estuaries that surround the
town. Dinner and a movie at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre,
the area's hottest new shopping area, is the perfect end
to any busy day. |
